Fishing Equipment & Clothing
Southern Lakes Fishing Safaris has quality fly fishing equipment available,
but if you wish to bring your own, a nine foot 6 weight fly rod is the preferred choice for this area. The rod
can be 2 piece, however a 4 piece has the advantage of being easier to transport. The fly line should be weight
forward floating and neutral coloured (olive or grey) for our clear waters. Bring a selection of tapered leaders
from 9-14ft, sizes 3X to 6X. Your guide will have plenty of dry flies, nymphs and streamers suited to the local
conditions. You may wish to bring your favourite fly patterns.
A good quality pair of polaroid sunglasses are essential for spotting trout in the lakes, rivers and streams. Waders
are only used early or late season. Lightweight gortex or similar stocking foot waders are best, with felt soled
boots and gravel guards. In summer, December - March, it is too hot to wear waders, and the most comfortable attire
is thermal long johns and shorts.
Clothing should be dull coloured for fishing, and bring a wide brimmed hat or a cap. Bring also a rain jacket and
a polar fleece jacket or sweater. The weather in New Zealand can change rapidly and therefore it is essential to
be prepared. A day pack is recommended to carry items such as camera, sunscreen and raincoat. |
